People ask me all the time how I get so much done. I’ve given it a lot of thought. So here are my personal productivity hacks.
HACK #1: Start Your Day Off Right
I start my day off with my yoga practice. I roll out of bed, put my yoga pants and tee shirt on, have a glass of water and get right to my mat.
I practice yoga 6 to 7 days a week. When I fall off the wagon there’s a huge difference in all areas of my life.
If you haven’t tried yoga, I can’t recommend it strongly enough. I use a variety of free YouTube videos. There are literally tens of thousands of them.
No matter what your body shape and size is, no matter how flexible you are or aren’t, no matter what your age is, and if you’ve never done yoga before there’s a yoga video that’s perfect for you on YouTube.
Guys, I’m talking to you too! (Don’t tell anyone, but I’ve finally got my husband doing yoga with me a few days a week.)
I love yoga because there are so many benefits all at once.
- It builds strength and flexibility
- It’s a breathing practice and really gets oxygen flowing through your body which is critical to so many things, including your brain, so it helps you be more productive during your day.
- It’s moving meditation, so it quiets the mind, which enhances clarity and vision
- I call it my “present moment” practice. By focusing on your breath you keep your mind from fretting over the past, or worrying about the future. The more you practice this the more you can bring it into your daily routine and train yourself to keep yourself focused.
I’ve been particularly loving my yin yoga practice lately. It’s a very slow, relaxing practice where you hold postures for several minutes at a time.
If you haven’t tried yoga, do yourself a favor and at least give it a try. With yin yoga you don’t even really need a mat. You can do it on a carpet, or on towels on the floor.
If yoga just isn’t your thing, try meditation. You don’t have to sit for an hour (although that’s not a bad thing at all), even 10 to 15 minutes of meditation a day can do wonders.
The benefits of yoga and meditation are well-proven now in the scientific world. And the rewards you’ll reap in your business and your life will be innumerable.
Yoga or meditation will set you up for HACK #2.
HACK #2: Manage Your Energy, Not Your Time
I’m talking about two different types of energy here. And it’s important to manage both.
The first, and in my opinion the most important energy, is the vibration you’re in.
Are in you in high frequency vibration? Do you feel a sense of peace, joy, calm, gratitude, love, ease, etc?
Or are you in a low frequency vibration? Do you get frustrated easily? Are you anxious, fearful, angry, worried, stressed, obsessing over something?
Keeping your energy in a high frequency vibration through the day requires a very active awareness practice.
If you’re not aware of how you’re feeling you can’t take steps to pivot and raise your vibration.
It’s all about making very conscious choices. You have the power to choose how you feel in any given moment. Choose the high frequency vibration.
The second energy is your level of rest and alertness, vs. fatigue.
Are you a morning person, or a night person?
When do you have the most energy and function best?
Plan to use that time to get focused work done, like writing promo emails, producing social media posts, creating lead magnets, working on landing pages, sales pages, or doing your daily prospecting system.
HACK #3: Prepare the Night Before
Every night before I go to bed I look a my calendar and create a plan for the following day.
This takes me five minutes of less.
Depending on what’s going on in my business and how hectic it is, or what deadline I’m working towards, I might write out a list.
I always know what calls I have on my calendar, when my blocks of “free” time are, and I have a plan for what I’m going to work on during those blocks of time.
For example, I never go to bed on Wednesday night without knowing what I’m going to do my training on Thursday afternoon.
Every week my entire Thursday morning is dedicated to creating my free training for the week. I know I’m going live at 1:30 pm EST in my Facebook group, for approximately 25 – 30 minutes.
I also know before I go to bed on Wednesday night, what calls I have booked after my training.
HACK #4: Create a Routine, or a Flow for Your Week
Human beings crave structure. Our brains need structure to function optimally.
Very often stress and overwhelm is caused by a lack of routine and structure.
From a biological point of view, our brain’s job is to keep us safe. A very important part of being safe is conserving energy.
Millions of years ago, and even much more recently, when we had to be concerned about being attacked by lions and tigers, or neighboring enemy tribes or clans, it was critical to our survival that we conserved energy so on a moment’s notice we were prepared to fight off any attacker.
Our evolutionary psychology, and our brain’s function hasn’t changed even over the millennium.
In order to keep you safe, your brain’s job is to be used as little as possible. Thinking physically requires the burning of energy. Therefore, thinking is dangerous!
If you’re thinking, you’re not conserving energy. Which means you can’t be in a ready state of fight or flight mode.
If you don’t have a routine and a flow for your days and weeks, you’re causing your brain to work too hard and your brain will be fighting against you to conserve energy.
This causes a vicious cycle of overwhelm and confusion…
I regularly see people who are so overwhelmed with everything they think they have to learn and do. They’ve got so many different things on the go, that none of them are really going anywhere. Many people are suffering big time from shiny object syndrome and FOMO (Fear of Missing Out).
To avoid this, create daily and weekly routines for yourself.
I know exactly what each day of the week feels like to me. I know the amount of energy I need to have for each day.
My weeks all have a flow to them that works really well for me. Create a flow that works for you, your style and your energy.
I use my online calendar to open up blocks of time when I’ll take client calls and close it for times to work on projects. Every week these blocks are the same. They don’t change unless I’m on vacation.
Mondays are always packed. After the weekend I’m re-charged and I’ve got the most energy. I’ll often have 8 or 9 hours of calls on a Monday. I’ve consciously designed my Monday’s this way on purpose.
Every Tuesday and Wednesday I have calls until 10:00 pm.
I go pretty much flat out Monday through Wednesday.
Thursdays are my dig deep and begin to wind down day. My calendar is blocked off until 2:00 pm. From 9:00 am – 1:00 pm is my prep time for my training at 1:30. I’ll book calls from 2:00 – 5:00 pm on Thursdays. But by 5:00 pm I’m “off air”.
Fridays I only take one-on-one calls from 9:00 to noon. I might do a group call in the early afternoon, but by 4:00 pm at the latest I’ve shut down. Friday afternoons are my time to do what I want and work on what I feel like. It’s my little piece of heaven.
I literally consciously create my life by design, not by default. I control my schedule. It doesn’t control me. This allows my brain to function much more effectively. Which means I can be infinitely more productive.
EXPERT TIP: Treat your business like a business! Schedule your life (appointments, etc.) around your business. NOT your business around your life.
HACK #5: Have a System for Prospecting & Recruiting
This is a system you can use in under an hour a day, 5 days a week and you will get results and move your business forward. Period. It just works! And it’s super easy and simple.
HACK #6: Eliminate Distractions
This is HUGE!!!
You’ve heard it before.
But are you doing it?
I have ALL notifications turned off on EVERY device!
There’s no dinging, no windows popping up. NOTHING.
My cell phone is on silent, so if someone calls I might notice it vibrating or not. (If you want to talk to me, you pretty much have to book on my calendar or show up on one of my group calls.)
It’s just after noon and I haven’t even opened my email yet. I won’t be looking at it until around 2:30 today.
SHOCKING… And, the world’s still spinning on it’s axis and my business hasn’t fallen apart without me having checked my email.
I check LinkedIn just once a day.
I’ll check my Facebook messages maybe 3 or 4 times a day, but I don’t keep it open so I’m constantly seeing messages.
When I’m working at my laptop I’ll close a window when I’m finished with it. I keep the fewest number of windows open as possible to eliminate distractions and stay focused.
